Alice Hegan Rice was a wildly famous author from Louisville, Kentucky at the turn of the century. "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch" was released in 1901, and it became the second best selling book of 1902. Rice also started the Cabbage Patch Settlement House (the same area of town the book depicts) for undeserved children which still exists today. The story was so popular it was adapted for the screen four times and also adapted for the stage
