Denim jeans were invented by Levi Strauss and Jacob W Davis Although jeans are often associated with North America, the material they are made from - denim - actually originates from the southern French city of Nimes. The name “denim” comes from the name of a sturdy fabric called “Serge de Nîmes”, initially made in Nîmes, France, hence “de Nîmes” - “denim”. Weavers of Nîmes tried to reproduce the cotton corduroy that was famously made in the city of Genoa, Italy but with no luck. Denim was first used for clothes worn by workers because of its high durability. Then it became widely popular in the 1930s when Hollywood started making cowboy movies in which actors wore jeans.
